In the state of Meghalaya, located in the north-eastern region of India, Shillong Polytechnic is the most important government-run institution of its kind. With its location on the outskirts of Shillong and its flanking by gentle hills that go in the opposite direction on the north side, it is an ideal location for higher instructional interests. The North Eastern Hill University, located around one km away, lends an extra academic significance to the location. Mawlai Kynton Massar, Shillong – 22 is the location of Shillong Polytechnic, which is around 5 kilometres away from the central business district of Shillong, which is the capital of the state. As the Director of Higher and Technical Education for the Government of Meghalaya, the Institute is subject to the regulatory and supervisory oversight of the government. The composite state of Assam was responsible for establishing Shillong Polytechnic in October of 1965. Initially, the foundation operated from the Tribal Research Institute in Mawlai, Gaushala. It utilized the office rooms of the institute as study halls and laboratories and a temporary shed for their workshop rehearsals. During that period, the most popular course that was being provided was called “considerable designing,” and the annual enrollment of students was sixty. Shillong Polytechnic was relocated to rented rooms in 1968 due to a fire in the Tribal Research Institute. In the long term, the institution was eventually relocated to its current location.
Following the partition of Assam in 1972, the foundation was placed under the supervision of the Government of Meghalaya, which is considered the most authoritative. In any case, the State Council for Technical Education Assam continued to exercise jurisdiction over its academic affairs until 1993, when the Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education (MSCTE) was established.
